Chia seeds definitely aren’t new (chia pets anyone!?) but they’ve most definitely gained in popularity over the last few years. There are a few good reasons why chia seeds have found their way into smoothies, raw desserts, puddings and baked goods. Not only do they have qualities which make them a great binder (perfect as an egg replacement for vegans) and have an interesting gel-like texture, but they’re also really amazing for your health.
Today we’re talking all things chia benefits here at Chef Good, read on to find out why you should add a sprinkle of chia seeds to your day.
Digestive health benefits
Chia seeds are packed with fibre. What do we know about fibre? It’s brilliant for your digestive system. If you’re a regular reader of our blog, you’ll already know fibre plays a very important role in keeping our digestive systems spick and span as well as keeping our blood glucose levels on an even keel. Just two tablespoons of chia seeds provide you with 9.6 g of fibre, which is about 38% of your required daily intake.
Beautiful skin and hair
Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids as well as being anti-inflammatory and rich in antioxidants. Put these three things together and you have a recipe for beautifully nourished, glowing and healthy skin, hair and nails. The word chia itself actually comes from the Nahuatl (Aztecan) word ‘chian’ which translates to ‘oily’ – no wonder chia seeds have been touted for their beauty benefits!
A healthy heart
Tick cardiovascular health off from your list, chia seeds have it covered. Okay, not totally, but chia is pretty amazing for your heart. Those same omega-3 fatty acids that are going to give you glowing skin, silky hair and nourished nails are also incredible for your heart – reducing inflammation and the risk for thrombosis and arrhythmias. Even more, they will decrease your levels of cholesterol. Yes, thanks.
Build strong bones and muscles
Just two tablespoons of chia seeds will provide you with 18 percent of your recommended daily intake of calcium, making chia seeds are a great plant-based source (especially for vegans or people on a paleo diet). With chia seeds also containing boron (key bone health mineral) and protein, these tiny seeds comprise the perfect combination for building strength in both bone and muscles.
Chia for weight loss
High in both fibre and protein but low in calories makes chia seeds an ideal choice if you’re looking to lose a cheeky few kilos or maintain a healthy weight. These little powerhouses are perfect if you’re wanting to feel full after a meal (who isn’t?!) and provide you with enough satisfaction so you won’t overeat.
