5 reasons to quit sugary drinks

You know sugar-laden drinks are bad for you, but you’re still drinking them. Let’s build that will power up today by listing 5 reasons to ditch the sugary drinks for good.

1: Links to weight gain

One of the reasons sugary drinks are particularly bad when it comes to weight gain is that the simple sugar fructose within them doesn’t get on with the hunger hormone ghrelin. Ghrelin is the hormone responsible for telling your brain you’ve had enough, so without the message getting through you’ll keep consuming. This means you’re piling tonnes of sugary drink calories on top of your regular total calorie intake.

2: Your teeth will decay

The sugar in soft drink, cordial and even fruit juice sits on teeth and gums causing teeth decay. But that’s not all, soft drinks also contain phosphoric and carbonic acid, creating an environment where teeth are particularly vulnerable to decay. Sugar provides an easily accessible energy source for bacteria in the mouth. This, combined with the acids found in soft drink, causes great harm to dental health over time.

3: Increases your risk of type 2 diabetes

An increased rate of sugary drink consumption has now been linked to an increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes independent of weight gain or obesity. Sugary drinks can lead to insulin resistance, so it’s not surprising to see that studies are linking their consumption with type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance is also the main anomaly in metabolic syndrome.

4: Higher risk of cardiovascular issues

This isn’t news, sugar intake was first linked to heart disease back in the 1960s! But more and more studies are now putting together that sugary beverage consumption is linked to heart attack and cardiovascular disease.

5: The very definition of empty calories

The calories you consume in a sugary drink won’t fill you up and contain absolutely zero essential nutrients.

  • No vitamins.
  • No minerals.
  • No fibre and no antioxidants.
  • No nothing.

So just say “no, thanks”.
